My little sister had lived with me since graduating from college. She moved to my city to start a business with me. The company was growing well, but her personal life was not. She had reached a mature age but remained single. There’s no flaw in her, she is one of the nicest creatures I’ve ever known.
I remember that noon was hot and I went to get a cold drink from the refrigerator. She came closer. “Sis, don’t be surprised. I am going to marry.”
I tried to be calm. I was happy to hear that but doubtful. She was ever close to a man but the relationship did not work. I couldn’t stand to see her disappointed again.
“Who is he? Why so sudden?”
My little sister was silent for a moment. “He’s not Indonesian.”
My chest was pounding. They had just met, and he was a foreigner.
She’s my only sister. Our parents were gone, and I am her closest relative. Letting her marry a stranger, who she probably only knew from social media, was too reckless.
Then she explained all about that guy. They never met except on video call. He came to my city accompanied by his father and a translator.
My brother-in-law came, and it was an awkward moment. Anyway thank goodness, he was real, and my sister had finally met her love.
But from our then perspective, it was a loss. A stranger suddenly became our family and took my sister away.
Despite that awkward situation, we still showed them our hospitality as Indonesians. Fortunately, my brother-in-law and his father are nice and adapted well to their new family. Up to now, I can still feel the excitement of everyone in that party.
Is this a happily ever after life story? Yes! May God bless them.
