What is something others do that sparks your admiration?

Owning a farmhouse has been my dream for a long time. However, David Beckham stole my idea. He makes me envious.

I watched David Beckham’s TikTok. In it, he shows his daily activities on the farm, how he raises poultries and harvests eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, and vegetables. Oh my God, how lucky he is. His career as a football player is not enough to amaze the world. He also shows off his animals and vegetables on his beautiful farm.

In Indonesia, the trend of subsistence farming is on the rise. The rich urbanites are moving to the countryside to build mini farms and start a slow-living lifestyle. They plant fruit trees, build fish ponds, and raise goats and cows. Of course, money is not their goal. They only want to live in peace and close to nature.

They are my inspiration, my source of admiration.

  • Cartoons to Lighten The Mind

    What’s your favorite cartoon?

I still remember how I waited for the Tom and Jerry cartoon show in the 70s. At that time, only a few households had televisions so my brothers and I had to go to our neighbor’s house to watch. We felt uncomfortable, sat still, and hid our laugh because the neighbor didn’t like us.

    Masha and The Bear

As I grew older, I still liked watching Tom and Jerry as well as Masha and the Bear. The characters of Tom and Jerry reminded me of my siblings who once lived under the same roof as me yet we fought so frequently. We need and love each other despite all quarrels. Besides its humor, this movie is a reminder to be more relaxed especially when facing family problems. Look at the conflicts from a lighter perspective so that they can be resolved quickly.

Another cartoon that I like is Masha and the Bear. This movie gave me another perspective about careless children. They may be a smart kid. If you have one like Masha, please be patient and enjoy all her acts. The colorful pictures of the hut and its surroundings also entertained me (since I am a tree lover).

  • My Mother Talked About Financial Independence

    December 8th, 2024

My resemblance to my mother is quite strong. I inherited some of her hobbies, including cooking, gardening, and sharing stories. I also adopted her generosity, religiosity, and sympathy for others (especially toward our relatives).

She did not have a higher education, but her point of view was logical and acceptable. My sister and I once commended her, “Our mother must have been an accomplished woman if she had the opportunity to have a career.”

I remember when she asked me not to leave my job even though my husband covered all my needs. A woman’s financial independence is substantial to maintain her happiness. “People change, and your husband may change too. You have to anticipate it. By having your own money, some problems can be solved.”

My mother had prepared me to be a strong woman. I was her eldest child. Even though I am a woman, I have to be ready to face the world with all its problems. The way my mother educated my mentality was truly astonishing because she was raised in a traditional culture that placed women one level below men. In Batak culture (we are from the Batak tribe, one of the tribes in Sumatra that strongly adheres to a patriarchal system), the woman is expected to be a loyal wife and devote her life to raising the children. Her happiness is defined by the success of her husband and children.

Maybe my mother was influenced by the Minang tradition (another tribe in Sumatra that holds a matrilineal system, in contrast with Batakness) where most women play a central role in managing family wealth.

Or, she had sensed that modern life demands people with good qualities to live in dignity. Both men and women must be financially independent and wise/kind-hearted to live in dignity.

Her advice accompanies my adult life. She passed away 15 years ago, but her spirit lives on with me every day. Her hobbies and her ‘want to be’ are always with me. I have been trying my best to make them true. All praise to her who has motivated me to become a strong woman.

What positive events have taken place in your life over the past year?
    View all responses

My little sister had lived with me since graduating from college. She moved to my city to start a business with me. The company was growing well, but her personal life was not. She had reached a mature age but remained single. There’s no flaw in her, she is one of the nicest creatures I’ve ever known.

I remember that noon was hot and I went to get a cold drink from the refrigerator. She came closer. “Sis, don’t be surprised. I am going to marry.”

I tried to be calm. I was happy to hear that but doubtful. She was ever close to a man but the relationship did not work. I couldn’t stand to see her disappointed again.

“Who is he? Why so sudden?”

My little sister was silent for a moment. “He’s not Indonesian.”

My chest was pounding. They had just met, and he was a foreigner.
She’s my only sister. Our parents were gone, and I am her closest relative. Letting her marry a stranger, who she probably only knew from social media, was too reckless.

Then she explained all about that guy. They never met except on video call. He came to my city accompanied by his father and a translator.

My brother-in-law came, and it was an awkward moment. Anyway thank goodness, he was real, and my sister had finally met her love.

But from our then perspective, it was a loss. A stranger suddenly became our family and took my sister away.

Despite that awkward situation, we still showed them our hospitality as Indonesians. Fortunately, my brother-in-law and his father are nice and adapted well to their new family. Up to now, I can still feel the excitement of everyone in that party.

Is this a happily ever after life story? Yes! May God bless them.

  • 6 Keys to Successful Implementation of Community Empowerment Programs

    December 6th, 2024

After writing my experience in conducting a reclamation program in Bungo Tanjung Village, I gained some insights on how to manage such an empowerment program.

See the article related in https://asnellyrd.com/2024/12/05/why-community-empowerment-programs-are-prone-to-failure/

Here are some keys to the success of the program that involves the local community.

    • The team must prepare a conceptual program that previously had been discussed and agreed upon by the chief of the program.
    • Comply with regulations related to program implementation.
    • Listen to community opinions and guide them wisely. As long as their opinions are in line with the program’s targets, it’s okay. If not, try to divert their opinions gently.
    • Explain all project schemes and set a target at every step of the program.
    • Involving them in almost all the process of decision-making.
    • Prepare cadres to continue activities at the project location.
  • Why Community Empowerment Programs Are Prone to Failure?

    December 5th, 2024

Empowering communities is a noble task, but the challenges are tough. I just completed a reclamation program of 10 hectares of illegal mining land in Bungo Tanjung Village of Merangin Regency. We and the local residents agreed that the ex-mining land would be reclaimed into an eco-park. In return, they will manage the park and earn income communally.

Initially, everything went well. The community agreed to work the land even though the wages were small. In the middle of the project implementation, several problems emerged, including a lack of transparency in expenditure and disputes between group members. Some felt they were not involved at all.

The pond and gravel hill were formed as a negative impact of illegal gold mining activity. In contrast with the landscape years ago when hundreds of hectares of paddy land dominated this area.

Several conditions would potentially make community empowerment programs vulnerable to failure, namely:

    • The local people of the project target expect the project can instantly improve their well-being. Project administration is needless, they try to disobey it.
    • Most of them have low education yet are quite confident that they know the best about themselves. With that insight, they tend to ignore the rule or initial agreement.
    • The locals tend to be easily influenced by one or two dominant figures. If the figures are good, the program gets supporters. If not, the program would be in trouble.
    • Traditional norms and values in rural are shifting. The people have become less sincere, and suspicious of one another. This hinders group cohesion.
    • People see the community empowerment program that’s conducted by the government as their privilege. They become less responsible and don’t care about the sustainability of the project.
  • 5 Good Things for My Mental Health

Share five things you’re good at.
    View all responses

These five things have been a part of me for years. They keep me motivated and calm among many unpleasant things out there:

    1. Cooking

Cooking. I am good at cooking Sumatera cuisine that’s famous for curry and fried dishes. My mother taught me to cook Rendang, Chicken Curry, Dendeng Balado, etc.

    2. Gardening

I have a collection of plants in the front and back yards. Most are tropical plants, including Hoyas, Philodendrons, Succulents, and Caladiums. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I spent most of my time in the garden. I also grow spider plants, sansevieria, and golden pothos, which are good for purifying polluted air.

    3. Cleaning the house

I never consider this as a regular household chore, the benefits are so many for my family and my peace of mind. A clean and tidy house gives positive energy to all of us. I feel calmer and ready to continue my days after cleaning or tidying up unused items in the house.

    4. Pouring out ideas, experiences, and journeys on journals, and my social media, including blogs, Instagram, TikTok, etc.

    5. Writing Articles

I am a regular writer for several mass media in Jambi, and occasionally write scientific papers in several national and international journals.

Life is not always smooth. One needs a mechanism to survive by having positive hobbies or activities. Thank goodness I have these five good things. All seems simple to others but for me, it’s important to maintain sanity.

What is one thing you would change about yourself?
    View all responses

Within the next two years, I will be retired from my job. This means that I have to prepare myself to live with a lower income and spend more time at home. Frankly, I don’t like both of them. I want to maintain my current lifestyle, which is to travel to many nice places in Indonesia and occasionally abroad. That needs money, doesn’t it?

I should have a high passive income to cover my low pension. Actually, I could have it if I had been wiser in spending my money by investing some of it. At that time, I didn’t think of the importance of having a passive income. No one taught me how to manage money profitably.

But I am still grateful, almost two years ago I invested some money in the stock market. Not much, but better than nothing. I learned how to choose a good stock and enjoyed the learning process and the profits.

One that pleases me is that I live in Indonesia which has a quite low cost of living. How about traveling? Perhaps I will explore more unique places in my region.

  • A Cup of Coffee for a Better World

    December 2nd, 2024

Coffee is a source of energy for me. Its taste and aroma can improve my mood and clear my mind. I have been drinking coffee for more than 30 years. Now I have changed my drinking coffee habit from coffee with sugar to low or no-sugar.

Drinking coffee creates a sensation. that is not easy to explain. For health reasons, I now reduce my coffee and tea consumption, to only one cup daily.

The province where I live, Jambi, is one of the coffee plantation centers in Indonesia. We have three types of coffee; Arabica coffee from the highlands, especially in Kerinci and Jangkat (a sub-district in Merangin), and Liberica coffee from the lowlands, especially in Tanjung Jabung Barat and Tanjung Jabung Timur Regencies. Between the highlands and lowlands, there is Robusta coffee produced by Merangin Regency.

Liberica Coffee from Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency.

Coffee cafes are mushrooming in every corner of the city. Even in rural areas such as Kayu Aro at the foot of Mount Kerinci, you can easily enjoy hot coffee in modern cafes or simple stalls.

At home, I also collect coffee from various regions in Jambi and Indonesia. I feel it is the privilege of someone who lives amidst the wealth of coffee. Sometimes I give Jambi coffee as a small gift to friends from out of town.

What are your feelings about eating meat?
    View all responses

I am not against eating meat. As long as the meat is halal and comes from an animal permissible according to Islamic law, I will eat it. Eating meat provides benefits that may not be found in vegetables and fruits.

As I get older, I change my diet by eating more fish, fruits, and vegetables. One or twice eating food containing beef in a week is still okay. More than that, I would have taken medicine or dumped the calories by jogging or exercising.

Want to know my fav food containing beef? Burger Bangor, an Indonesian burger brand.
